The link between stress levels and magnesium status is close, and stress and hypomagnesemia reinforce each other in their negative effects. Stress is also associated with increased urinary magnesium excretion.
A recent study has highlighted a possible link between urinary magnesium loss and metabolic syndrome, a group of health problems including overweight, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
After analyzing data from over 15,000 adults in the US, researchers found that those with greater magnesium loss in their urine had an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
In summary, a high rate of magnesium loss in urine was associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, independent of gender, age and ethnicity.
To reduce this risk, the researchers suggest taking magnesium supplements or eating a diet rich in this mineral. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings and develop effective strategies to prevent or treat metabolic syndrome
